Commissioner From 1987 to 2007, Doug Hall was Director of the Queensland Art Gallery in Brisbane, Australia. He has served on a range of state and federal cultural organisations including Chair of the Australia Council’s Visual Arts Board and a member of the Australia Council. He has also served as a member of the Australia International Cultural Council (AICC). He serves on the Executive Committee of the Australia-Thailand Institute the Asia Art Council, Guggenheim Museum (New York). He is a Director at Deutscher and Hackett, a major Australian auction house operating in Melbourne and Sydney. He continues with academic and other advisory roles in the Australasian region. Under his directorship, the Queensland Art Gallery expanded its international focus and developed a strong engagement with Asia, especially through his initiative, the Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art. He conceived the idea for the Gallery of Modern Art and oversaw its development; it opened in December 2006, more than doubling the size of the existing gallery. In 1999, he was awarded the University of Queensland’s degree of Doctor of Philosophy honoris causa for his contribution to the visual arts in Queensland. In June 2001, he was awarded the Order of Australia (AM), and in 2006 France awarded him a Chevalier dans l‘Ordre des Arts et Lettres.
